17 Days until Senate Judiciary Committee hearing begins

  1.   Some Senate Democrats have praised exceptionally qualified Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorusch or called for an up-or-down vote on his nomination.

Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein (D-CA)

“He’s a very caring person and he’s obviously legally very smart…I think we are dealing with someone who is impressive.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH)

“I haven’t heard any Democrats saying we don’t think that Judge Gorsuch should get a hearing or that he should get an up-or-down vote. Everybody I’ve talked to agrees he should get a hearing and an up-or-down vote.”

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV)

“Let’s give the man a chance, talk to him. My goodness, don’t shut him down before he gets started.”

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-WV)

“Sen. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota said that Trump’s nominee ‘should get a full hearing.’ Asked if the nominee should also get a straight up-or-down vote rather than be blocked by a filibuster, she replied: ‘Absolutely.’”

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-WV)

(MSNBC’s “Live,” 1/31/17)

“I will support having a hearing and a vote because I think the President’s nominee deserves that consideration.”

Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE)

“I will push for a hearing and I will push for a vote.”

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL)

“I will meet with Judge Gorsuch and support a hearing and a vote for him.”

Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-IN)

“As I have said part of our job as Senators includes considering, debating, and voting on judicial nominations, including the Supreme Court. I will carefully review and consider the record and qualifications of Neil Gorsuch.”

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO)

“We should have a full confirmation hearing process and a vote on ANY nominee for the Supreme Court.”

  1.   Shawn Zeller writes at Roll Call that over 90 percent of Democratic staffers they polled believe Judge Gorsuch will be confirmed to the Supreme Court.

Roll Call: Survey: Democratic Aides Doubt Senate Can Block SCOTUS Nominee

“Of the Democratic staffers who responded to CQ Roll Call’s most recent Capitol Insiders Survey, 91 percent said Gorsuch would be confirmed.

  1.   Lydia Wheeler notes in The Hill that 31 members of the Supreme Court bar support Judge Gorsuch’s nomination to be our next Supreme Court justice.

The Hill: Members of Supreme Court bar vouch for Gorsuch

Members of the Supreme Court bar are backing Neil Gorsuch, President Trump’s nominee to become the next justice. In a letter sent Wednesday to Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), 31 members of the Supreme Court Bar voiced their support for Gorsuch to be confirmed to the vacant seat left open by the death last year of Justice Antonin Scalia… The group said many of them have either worked with Gorsuch, litigated against him or argued before him in court. ‘We hold a broad range of political, policy and jurisprudential views,’ they wrote. ‘But we are unified in offering our support of Judge Gorsuch’s nomination.’”
