Conservatives Applaud Senate Republicans for Letting the People Have a Voice in Choosing the Next Supreme Court Justice

Washington, DC – Today, conservative leaders responded to a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing by applauding Senate Republicans for letting the people have a voice in choosing the next Supreme Court Justice.

Carrie Severino, Chief Counsel and Policy Director, Judicial Crisis Network:

“Democrats have proven yet again that they will say and do anything to turn the Court into a rubber stamp for an extreme agenda. Chairman Grassley and the Senate Republicans are right to let the people decide the next justice through their votes for president. These same Democrats, and others including VP Biden, have repeatedly argued that it would harm the Court’s reputation to have a confirmation battle in the midst of such a divisive and political time.”

Steve Forbes, Chairman and Editor-in Chief, Forbes Media:

“Millions of Americans have already cast votes for president and the Republicans have taken the right approach in letting the people decide, through their votes for president, who the next Supreme Court justice should be – regardless of who wins. Chairman Grassley has been right about this all along, specifically referencing the so-called ‘Biden Rules,’ in which no less than Vice President – and former Committee Chairman – Joe Biden said there should be no Supreme Court confirmations in an election year when the government was divided.”

Ken Blackwell, Visiting Professor, Liberty University School of Law:

“In typical fashion, Senate liberals are wasting the taxpayers’ money and time by using a markup session to get on their hypocritical high horses about the Supreme Court vacancy. They know very well that many of them, themselves, have argued in the past for exactly what the Republicans are saying today: don’t deny the American people a voice in deciding the next Supreme Court justice, let them participate through their votes for president. Millions of those votes have already been cast.”

Jenny Beth Martin, CEO and co-founder, Tea Party Patriots:

“The untimely passing of Justice Antonin Scalia has robbed us of one of the greatest defenders of the Constitution we have ever known. If President Obama succeeds in denying the American people a right to have a say in who will be the next Justice, America’s future will be gravely at risk. The very fate of our Constitution hangs in the balance. The members of Tea Party Patriots have always said they will hold politicians accountable when they fail to do the right thing, and stand behind them when they stand up for the American people and our values. Republicans in the Senate — and those on the Senate Judiciary Committee, in particular — deserve to be commended for their commitment to ensuring the people will have a voice in the selection of the next Supreme Court Justice.”
