  1.   Last night, Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) called for an up-or-down vote for exceptionally-qualified Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch in a speech on the Senate floor.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH): “Everybody I’ve talked to agrees [Gorsuch] should get a hearing and an up-or-down vote.”

  1.   The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board writes this morning that Judge Gorsuch is clearly in the mainstream, given his record at the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.

WSJ Editorial: Gorsuch in the Mainstream

“According to an analysis by Jeff Harris at Kirkland & Ellis, Judge Gorsuch has written some 800 opinions since joining the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals in 2006. Only 1.75% (14 opinions) drew dissents from his colleagues. That makes 98% of his opinions unanimous even on a circuit where seven of the 12 active judges were appointed by Democratic Presidents and five by RepublicansJudge Gorsuch is known on the Tenth Circuit as a strong writer and consensus builder, and the pattern extends to his participation in opinions by other judges. Judge Gorsuch has heard roughly 2,700 cases and dissented in only 35—1.3%… Of at least eight cases considered by Mr. Gorsuch that were appealed to the Supreme Court, the Justices upheld his result in seven. In four of those the decisions were unanimous.”

  1.   William J. Hughes, Former U.S. Attorney, Democratic candidate for Congress, and son of retired Congressman and Ambassador William J. Hughes (D-NJ), says of Judge Gorsuch: “I know that his positions are well reasoned, well supported, void of any political agenda or influence whatsoever.”

William J. Hughes: “On behalf of my family, we support Judge Neil M. Gorsuch and ask that the Senate swiftly confirm his nomination.”

“Judge Neil Gorsuch is a brilliant legal scholar and an authority on the law. His vast experience and academic credentials are beyond reproach. Neil is also a genuinely decent guy who appreciates the fact that his decisions will impact real people. While we may not agree on every point, I know that his positions are well reasoned, well supported, void of any political agenda or influence whatsoever, and that Judge Gorsuch earnestly believes in their correctness. He is by no means an ideologue. Both parties have a vested interest in the appointment of justices to our Supreme Court that will jealously and vigorously protect the integrity of our independent judiciary. Judge Gorsuch will continue that very legacy with honor and grace. On behalf of my family, we support Judge Neil M. Gorsuch and ask that the Senate swiftly confirm his nomination.”
